Inside The ASOFIA Interior Fitout Awards 2014 – 2015

Interior Outfit’s inaugural issue focuses on the Australian Shop And Office Fitting Industry Assocation Awards (ASOFIA) for 2014 – 2015.


The National Fitout Of The Year Award went to Melbourne’s Chanel Boutique. The boutique quadrupled their floor space from their previous Collins Street location. The remodel comes courtesy of New York luxury retail designer Peter Marino. The ground floor of the storefront is dedicated to jewelry, handbags, and shoes, while the upstairs is dedicated to ready-to-wear and a private VIP room.

The centerpiece of the fitout has to be a custom-made brass hand railing adjoining a marble staircase beneath a faux skylight over a large scale art piece from Dorothy Napangardi Karlangu, from 2006. Other standout features include luxury lighting from Norm Philips, as well as art pieces, finishes, and fabrics sourced from local artisans. Standard glass shelving features an innovative fine silk resin between sheets of glass, which was also sourced from local craftsmen.

The wall panels also feature an innovative design, being custom-made and hand-painted over a honeycomb design, to prevent warping. Dressing rooms also feature interior as well as exterior chambers, for one-on-one consultations with Chanel employees. All wallpapers were handmade in New York, with every piece being drawn-out and consulted over before hanging.

Redesigning the storefront while interior and exterior building were still going on proved to be the main challenge facing the shopfitters. 5 office workers, 20 factory workers, and 40 shopfitters put in over 11,000 hours to complete the award-winning redesign! The international design team worked extensively to meet local building concerns, with every element of the redesign being drawn out in the shop, down to the millimeter.
